R&D Intern - Summer 2027

About the role

ABB is hiring an R&D intern for its Mebane, NC site for the summer of 2027. The position reports to the NAM R&D Team Leader and offers hands-on experience through various projects, with daily tasks directed by the team. The work model is onsite or hybrid in Mebane.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with teams to support ABB's operations and complete projects on time.
• Use knowledge of customer needs and ABB's offerings to propose solutions that meet customer expectations.
• Take part in team meetings, brainstorming sessions and collaborative work, and seek feedback from managers and teammates.
• Learn and use solid modeling software (PTC Creo / Windchill) to build models, assemblies, detailed drawings and BOMs for plastic, stamped metal and electrically conductive parts.
• Prepare and maintain product documentation, instruction manuals, project notebooks, design and test documentation, and regulatory standards (UL, CSA, NEC).
• Take part in design reviews and analyse the concept and cost-effectiveness of mechanical and electrical designs.
• Support cross-functional work with purchasing and manufacturing, and assist purchasing in supplier selection and component evaluation.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering in the United States.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future.
• Must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite.
• Ability to think critically, prioritise tasks and manage several tasks at once while keeping quality standards.

Required skills

• Solid modeling software (PTC Creo / Windchill)
• Knowledge of UL, CSA and NEC standards

What we offer

• Practical experience through projects and exposure to ABB's operations.
• Pay of $20-$34 per hour, depending on qualifications, graduation year and experience.
