Quality Inspector - MPI Calera

About the role

McWane Plant and Industrial (MPI), a division of McWane Inc. based in Birmingham, Alabama, is hiring a full-time Quality Inspector for its Calera site. The inspector inspects and tests machined, fabricated and assembled parts and products for defects, wear and deviations from specifications, using precision measuring instruments and complex test equipment. Incoming materials, in-process checks and final inspections are carried out so that all products meet quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure personal and team safety, wear appropriate PPE and keep the work area clean
• Inspect incoming materials and mark items as accepted or rejected
• Analyze blueprints, data and manuals to determine inspection and testing procedures and required measuring instruments
• Record inspection and test data (weights, temperatures, grades, quantities) and generate non-conformance reports in the QT9 system
• Maintain inspection reports, discuss results and recommend corrective actions
• Monitor production operations and equipment, and make or order process and assembly adjustments
• Write routine memos and correspondence

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 1-3 years in a hands-on quality role, including experience as a QC Inspector in a manufacturing environment
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
• Ability to work in heat, cold, noise, vibration, dust and fumes, and to work outside in all weather
• Ability to work overtime and extended hours, and to operate a forklift and overhead crane

Required skills

• Proficiency with measuring instruments such as calipers, gauges, micrometers and height gages
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office
• Experience using quality management systems, particularly QT9
• Good verbal and written communication skills
