Produce Assistant Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Produce Assistant Department Manager in Knoxville, Tennessee. The role partners with the Department Manager to keep the produce department running smoothly, from product freshness and sales-floor management to training employees and stepping in to lead when needed. It is an hourly position.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers warmly, assist them and share knowledge of produce items and their uses
• Keep department standards consistent: product freshness, rotation, replenishment and proper refrigeration temperatures
• Set and reset sales areas and coordinate and troubleshoot the salad bar and juice bar
• Check deliveries, verify accuracy, log invoices and assist with inventory and ordering
• Assist with the fruit and holiday basket program, stock aisles, break down pallets, restock the cooler and transport product to the floor
• Train new employees, instruct and assign work, and allocate personnel as needed
• Resolve customer and vendor issues promptly and handle management duties in the manager's absence
• Follow sanitation procedures, answer the phone and follow the dress code and hygiene standards

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; over one year of similar or related experience preferred
• Food safety training encouraged
• Ability to lift, carry, push or pull 100 pounds or more and stand and walk on hard surfaces for long periods
• Ability to work in cool, damp cooler or freezer environments and to operate pallet jacks, forklifts or similar equipment (certification required before independent use)
• Ability to use sharp knives and blades safely, and to operate a cardboard baler or compactor where applicable

Required skills

• Math skills including fractions, decimals and percentages
• Leadership, team training and clear communication with customers, team members and vendors
• Strong knowledge of produce products

Reports to the Store Director, Store Manager and Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations and Health Wellness Home, and directs Produce Clerks. Employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen.
