Assistant Meat Department Manager

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring an Assistant Meat Department Manager in Knoxville, Tennessee. The role reports to the Meat Department Manager and assists in presenting fresh, high-quality products at competitive prices while providing prompt, efficient and friendly customer service. It is a non-exempt position.

Key responsibilities

• Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service, greet customers by name where possible, and escort or help customers find products
• Answer the telephone promptly and take product orders
• Review product for freshness, pull by stale date, rotate and replenish display cases, and prepare cutting lists for case fills
• Tenderize, grind and cut merchandise, order new items, and conduct cutting tests
• Maintain proper temperatures and storage procedures, and follow sanitation and hygiene guidelines
• Train new employees and supervise Meat Specialists, Meat Wrap Coordinators and Clerks, assigning and reviewing their work
• Handle customer issues, wrap, weigh and label product, clean the department, and act as manager in the Department Manager's absence
• Give advice on meal solutions and preparation, and provide input on goals and pricing

Required profile

• High school or equivalent education
• Computer meat program and Hy-Vee food safety training; Cornell Home Study food safety course (effective 03/07/96)
• Dale Carnegie is encouraged
• Over one year of related work experience preferred
• Ability to solve practical problems, do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages, and lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently

Required skills

• Proper sanitation and food safety procedures
• Use of meat processing equipment such as power ban saw, grinder, tenderizer, slicer, knife, automatic patty machine, automatic stuffer, rotisserie and pallet jack
• Use of the C.A.R.S. reordering system and computer

Working conditions include exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and a fast-paced environment. Employment is contingent on a successful pre-employment drug screen.
