Principal Machine Learning Scientist, AI for Drug Discovery

About the role

Roche's Frontier Research group within the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is looking for a Principal Machine Learning Scientist focused on AI for Drug Discovery. The CoE unifies research and early development across Genentech and Pharma to use data and artificial intelligence to help scientists deliver more innovative medicines. Frontier Research focuses on foundational machine learning research and new algorithmic frameworks, with a flat scientific structure and a commitment to open science.

Key responsibilities

• Develop theoretical frameworks and algorithms for sampling and generative modeling.
• Contribute to publications and present results at internal and external scientific conferences.
• Collaborate on research that advances the state of the art in machine learning.
• Take part directly in experiments: design experimental details, write reusable code, run evaluations and organize results.
• Work with a large, globally distributed team.

Required profile

• PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning or a related discipline, with 2-7 years of relevant work experience.
• Strong publication record in generative modeling, including academic journals such as JMLR and peer-reviewed ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, COLT).
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Preferred: published work with theoretical contributions.

What we offer

• Expected salary in California of $201,300 - $373,800 and in New York City of $192,500 - $357,500, depending on experience, qualifications and location.
• A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and company performance.

The position must be based in South San Francisco, New York City or Basel, and relocation benefits are not available.
