Principal Data Scientist, Online

About the role

The Principal Data Scientist leads data science initiatives that drive business profitability, efficiency and customer experience, helping build Home Depot's advanced analytics infrastructure. The role focuses on finding business opportunities where data science is a competitive advantage, leading large projects, mentoring team members and contributing to the company's intellectual property through innovative algorithms. It reports to a Senior Manager or above, has no direct reports and typically involves less than 10% overnight travel.

Key responsibilities

• Solution development: design and develop algorithms and models for large datasets, select and interpret advanced analytics methods, and communicate insights to technical and non-technical leaders
• Project management and team support: set project goals, prioritize work, mentor junior colleagues, distribute workload, support recruiting and act as a technical subject matter expert
• Business collaboration: build trust with internal customers and cross-functional teams, educate partners on advanced analytics and seek new business opportunities
• Technical exploration: learn new developments, improve data science through replicable solutions and documentation, define best practices, attend conferences and publish papers, and network with academic and industry experts

Required profile

• Age 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States
• Preferred: PhD in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Math, Statistics, etc.) or equivalent experience
• Preferred: 10+ years of experience in business intelligence and analytics
• Preferred: demonstrated mastery of predictive modeling, data mining, data analysis and statistical techniques

Required skills

• Preferred: modern scripting language (Python)
• Preferred: querying data (Google BigQuery or SQL)
• Preferred: Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools such as Tableau
• Preferred: prescriptive modeling (optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search, NLP)
