Policy Counsel or Senior Policy Counsel

About the role

Americans United for Separation of Church and State is seeking a Policy Counsel (or Senior Policy Counsel) to advance its state‑level public policy agenda. The role works closely with the Public Policy team to develop and promote policies that protect church‑state separation.

Key responsibilities

• Draft legislation, coalition letters, backgrounders, talking points, and policy reports.
• Conduct legal and policy research, analyze current events, and develop strategies to achieve state and federal policy goals.
• Coordinate cross‑departmental advocacy initiatives with organizing, communications, and legal teams.
• Represent Americans United with partner organizations, coalitions, and policymakers to build support for policy objectives.
• Track and analyze pending state and federal legislation and regulatory proposals related to church‑state issues.
• Provide expert analysis and advice to inform education, mobilization, and litigation strategies.

Required profile

• Minimum 1–2 years of experience in legal research, policy analysis, or related advocacy work.
• Strong written communication skills for drafting policy documents and advocacy materials.
• Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments and with external partners.
• Commitment to the mission of church‑state separation and inclusive workplace values.
