Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist – Surgical PRN

About the role

This PRN position at Lutheran Hospital supports the surgical team by providing first and second assist in orthopaedic and general surgery cases. The role is variable, covering weekday shifts between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm.

Key responsibilities

• Perform first‑assist and second‑assist duties in the operating room for orthopaedic and general surgery procedures.
• Conduct patient histories, physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and develop treatment plans.
• Prescribe and monitor medications within licensure limits and collaborate with the multidisciplinary care team.
• Participate in medical rounds, discharge planning, and quality monitoring activities.

Required profile

• Current licensure as an APRN (NP, CNS) or PA in the applicable state(s) with appropriate certifications.
• OR experience, preferably in orthopaedic surgery; RNFA “First Assist” certification required for APRNs.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) or ATLS may be required based on setting.

Required skills

• First‑assist and second‑assist techniques in the operating room.
• OR experience with orthopaedic procedures.
• RNFA certification (for APRNs).
• BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, ATLS certifications.
