Pharmacy Intern

About the role

AdventHealth is hiring a Pharmacy Intern in Orlando, Florida, working PRN on alternating first and second shifts. The intern supports pharmacists in medication dispensing, compounding and patient care, and develops the skills needed to function as a pharmacy technician.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to medication dispensing requests, prepare medications for pharmacist review, deliver checked medications to nursing units and return unused or expired medications to pharmacy areas.
• Develop skills in dispensing, compounding, operational programs and hospital computer systems.
• Follow procedures for filling, recording and distributing pharmacy kits, carts, trays and interdepartmental product transfers.
• Assist pharmacists with sterile compounding, controlled substance handling, medication order review, clinical consult review, medication distribution and patient education.
• Support medication-use process improvements, special projects and medication safety, including identifying and reporting medication errors.
• Handle, process and dispose of waste, including hazardous waste, using PPE and spill kits.
• Participate in departmental meetings and educational activities.

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Pharmacy Intern (PSI) license; licensed pharmacist preferred.
• Good reading, writing, speaking and comprehension of English.
• Ability to work independently, follow directions and handle frequent interruptions and emergencies.

Required skills

• Aseptic techniques and knowledge of medical terminology.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in repetitive tasks.
• Preferred: expertise in hospital pharmacy operations, pharmacy automation, USP 795/797/800 guidelines and hospital computer systems.
