Payroll Tax Manager

About the role

Baxter is seeking a Payroll Tax Manager to oversee payroll tax operations for 15 legal entities across all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico. The role ensures accurate tax compliance, supports financial reporting, and partners with Finance, Legal, and external advisors on strategic initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day payroll tax operations, including withholding, calculation, and remittance for federal, state, local, and territorial taxes.
• Manage an outsourced Payroll Tax Partner, ensuring timely deposits, statutory filings, and audit support.
• Monitor changing tax laws, maintain registrations, terminations, and rate updates for all jurisdictions.
• Lead vendor performance reviews, SLA adherence, and resolve escalations or discrepancies.
• Prepare and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual tax filings and returns.
• Participate in payroll tax reconciliation to the general ledger and support month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes.
• Collaborate with Finance on SOX controls, internal audits, and provide tax guidance for benefits, equity, and compensation programs.
• Support M&A due diligence, tax registrations, and strategic tax initiatives.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in payroll tax compliance and operations across multiple U.S. jurisdictions.
• Proven ability to manage outsourced tax service providers and lead vendor relationships.
• Strong knowledge of federal, state, local, and territorial payroll tax regulations.
• Experience working cross‑functionally with Finance, Legal, HR, and Treasury teams.
• Ability to handle complex tax matters, audits, and strategic initiatives such as M&A.
