Patient Care Nursing Assistant – Pre & Post-Surgical General Surgery

About the role

Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital's 3 West Tower Complex Medical Care unit, a 46-bed Magnet hospital, cares for adult and geriatric patients undergoing general, breast, gynecology, pancreatic/liver and urology surgeries. As a Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) in the Med/Surg department, you provide or assist with basic patient care under the supervision of an RN, report abnormal findings and keep patient rooms clean and orderly. The shift is nights, 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., with every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.

Key responsibilities

• Provide or assist with patient care under RN supervision, including vital signs, weight, personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers and transport, pulse oximetry, point-of-care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheters
• Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional condition to an RN
• Keep patient rooms clean and orderly

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• Nursing students who have completed at least one clinical rotation in an accredited program may use it instead of the required experience
• Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) considered
• Proficiency in applied mathematics and reading comprehension at minimum junior-high level
• Ability to move and lift patients, with frequent standing and walking; medium work of 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and 10 to 25 pounds frequently
• Follows standard precautions with personal protective equipment

Required skills

• BLS certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross within the new-hire period (nursing students must obtain it before hire)
• Preferred: State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)
