Pathologist Assistant

About the role

Under the supervision of pathologists, the Pathologist Assistant performs gross examination of surgical specimens, assists in specimen processing, and ensures confidentiality of patient information. This position supports the diagnostic team while adhering to CAP guidelines and Ochsner’s commitment to exceptional patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Receive, verify, and accession surgical specimens, ensuring correct patient and container identification.
• Orient tissue, apply dye or ink to mark margins, and prepare thin, properly oriented sections.
• Dictate clear, concise specimen descriptions and document any quality‑assurance incidents.
• Prepare frozen sections, stain slides, and take gross photographs as required.
• Resolve specimen problems within 24 hours and contribute to performance‑improvement projects.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in science or a related field (Master’s preferred).
• No prior work experience required; completion of a two‑year training program is acceptable.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally across all levels of patient care.

Required skills

• Computer proficiency for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
• Ability to use Windows‑style applications and role‑specific software packages.
