Part-Time Lecturer in Chemistry and Biochemistry

About the role

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at John Carroll University is seeking a part-time Laboratory Instructor (Adjunct Instructor) to support the General, Organic and Biological Chemistry (GOB) sequence for nursing students in the College of Health. The instructor teaches one section of the GOB laboratory, supports student learning and scientific skill development, maintains laboratory safety and operations, and works closely with the faculty teaching the lecture section. The course meets on Mondays from 2:00 to 3:50 pm, from January 20 to May 17, 2027. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare course materials and pedagogy aligned with department learning goals, including reagents, equipment and instructional resources.
• Conduct live classes on campus and hold at least two hours per week of office hours.
• Deliver pre-laboratory instruction and demonstrations that reinforce key chemical and biochemical concepts.
• Guide students in laboratory techniques, scientific reasoning, data analysis and scientific communication.
• Provide individualized support and mentorship to students from diverse academic backgrounds.
• Evaluate students through laboratory reports, quizzes, assignments and practical assessments using established grading criteria.
• Use the Canvas learning management system to organize course information.

Required profile

• Master's degree or PhD (preferred) in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, biology or a closely related field.
• Previous teaching experience in undergraduate laboratory courses is preferred.
• Ability to work during normal university business hours (8:30 am - 5:00 pm), with possible work outside those hours depending on department operations.
