Assistant Professor of Practice, Spanish

About the role

The Department of Ancient and Modern Languages and Cultures at John Carroll University is seeking a full-time Assistant Professor of Practice in Spanish, starting Fall 2027. This is a renewable, non-tenured, 9-month position with a 4-4 teaching load covering all levels of undergraduate Spanish. The university seeks generalists who can teach language courses as well as content on 20th- and 21st-century literary and cultural production of the Iberian Peninsula.

Key responsibilities

• Teach a range of courses supporting the undergraduate major and minor in Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and develop new courses as interest and demand allow.
• Expand faculty-led study-tour opportunities to Spanish-speaking countries.
• Advise students majoring or minoring in Spanish and Hispanic Studies and supervise senior capstone projects.
• Possible additional duties: Spanish for special purposes (e.g. Spanish for Health Care), coordination, assessment, advising student organizations, and courses in the integrative core curriculum and Onward Experience.
• Possible coordination of lower-level Spanish sections and experiential learning.
• Active participation in departmental and university life, including meetings and workshops.

Required profile

• MA in Spanish or a closely related field.
• Substantial experience teaching Spanish language and culture at all undergraduate levels.
• Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
• Preferred: PhD in Spanish or a closely related field.
