Paralegal – Property Tax Specialist

About the role

Mayer Brown is seeking a Paralegal with expertise in property tax to join its Real Estate department in Chicago. The role focuses on preparing and filing tax appeals, managing deadlines, and supporting attorneys in complex real‑estate tax matters.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and file appeals before the Cook County Assessor, Cook County Board of Review, Illinois Circuit Court, and Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board.
• Maintain a property tax database, track filing deadlines, and ensure compliance with Treasurer, Clerk, and Recorder of Deeds procedures.
• Advise attorneys on state and local tax laws, rule changes, and filing requirements.
• Design and produce client reporting materials, including multi‑year tax and assessment summaries.
• Support business development initiatives by preparing presentations and client meeting materials.
• Oversee workflow, prioritize deadlines, and manage practice‑group tracking systems.
• Perform additional duties as required to meet firm objectives.

Required profile

• Strong knowledge of Illinois and Cook County property tax processes and related governmental offices.
• Ability to analyze and interpret state and local tax regulations.
• Excellent organizational skills with a focus on deadline management.
• Effective communication skills for advising attorneys and interacting with clients.
• Experience preparing detailed tax reports and client presentations.
