Ophthalmic Technician

About the role

This role provides individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. The Ophthalmic Technician assists in delivering health care services and supports the healthcare team.

Key responsibilities

• Enables clinic operations by effectively managing patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
• Cleans, disinfects and prepares exam rooms, instruments and equipment for patient exams.
• Obtains visual acuity and other ophthalmic tests such as color vision, stereo vision, and tear secretion.
• Documents pertinent patient information in the medical record per department guidelines.
• Ensures future appointments are scheduled and referrals/pre‑authorizations are obtained.

Required profile

• High School diploma or equivalent (required); Bachelor’s degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology (preferred).
• 2 years experience or Associate’s degree in Ophthalmic Assisting (preferred).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required); Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Windows applications, data entry, and multi‑line telephone systems.
• Ability to perform ophthalmic tests: visual acuity, extra ocular motility, pupil evaluation, tonometry, lensometry, keratometry, refractometry, slit lamp examination, and contact lens handling.
• Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
