Ophthalmic Technician – Full Time

About the role

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician to support eye‑care services at UHealth SoLé Mia. The role involves comprehensive patient testing, documentation, and assistance to providers in a fast‑paced clinical environment.

Key responsibilities

• Document patient visits in the EMR, including chief complaint, ocular history, and medication review.
• Perform clinical tests such as Goldman applanation tonometry, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care, pachymetry, visual acuity, contact lens insertion/removal, lensometry, color vision, manual refraction, and various visual field assessments.
• Support providers during examinations, prepare patients for intravitreal injections, and facilitate virtual‑care encounters.
• Maintain equipment calibration, stock clinical rooms, and travel to satellite offices as needed.
• Adhere to infection‑control standards, patient‑safety protocols, and University of Miami policies.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent with at least 1 year of relevant ophthalmic experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Professional appearance, strong communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Comfortable serving patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
• Experience with tonometry (Goldman, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care) and pachymetry.
• Ability to conduct visual acuity, refraction, contact lens handling, and visual‑field testing.
• Basic Microsoft Office skills.
