Health Information Management Supervisor – Correctional Health

About the role

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services is seeking an experienced Health Information Management (HIM) Supervisor to lead coding, auditing, and Release of Information (ROI) functions in correctional health settings. This is an emergency appointment up to 90 days with potential for permanent employment, supporting the DOJ Consent Decree to improve jail health services.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise a team of technical staff performing medical record coding, auditing, and ROI processing.
• Conduct staff meetings, performance reviews, training, and workflow optimization.
• Serve as liaison for internal and external audits, manage audit requests, and ensure compliance with billing and payment regulations.
• Handle escalations with attorneys, law enforcement, auditors, and insurers, providing timely information and education.
• Generate bi‑weekly and monthly reports on ROI volumes, quality metrics, and productivity.

Required profile

• Proven supervisory experience in health information management or medical records.
• Strong knowledge of HIPAA, state privacy laws, and compliance requirements.
• Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage high‑volume workflows.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with legal, compliance, and IT teams.
