Nursing Department Assistant III – General Surgery

About the role

The Nursing Department Assistant III provides essential support to patients on the General Surgery 5D unit at Lutheran Hospital. Working evenings, you will assist with daily living activities, maintain a clean environment, and perform basic clinical tasks while collaborating with the nursing team.

Key responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and ensure a safe, orderly patient environment.
• Perform EKGs, monitor blood glucose levels, collect specimens, and document vital signs.
• Maintain cleanliness of patient rooms and equipment, preparing rooms for new admissions.
• Report equipment, supply, or maintenance issues promptly to the RN.
• Conduct hourly patient safety rounds, checking bed alarms, side rails, and restraints as needed.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained within the new‑hire period.
• Physical ability to lift patients and perform frequent standing, walking, kneeling, and reaching.
• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) certification and prior nursing assistance experience are preferred.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) certification (preferred).
• Proficiency in performing EKGs and blood glucose monitoring.
• Specimen collection and vital‑sign documentation.
