Mechanical Design Engineer, Aerodynamic Prototype

About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will join Tesla's Aerodynamic Prototype team to design, build, and test physical wind‑tunnel models that support vehicle aerodynamic optimization. You will work closely with aerodynamicists, designers, and other engineering groups in a fast‑paced product development environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design and create build plans for wind‑tunnel models aligned with aerodynamic test plans.
• Identify, secure, and coordinate resources needed to fabricate test hardware.
• Execute build plans, including design release, fabrication, assembly, instrumentation, and testing.
• Perform hand calculations and finite‑element analysis (FEA) to validate mechanical design decisions.
• Assist in developing and validating novel airflow‑management features on full‑size and scale test hardware.
• Collaborate with engineers, suppliers, model makers, and fabricators to produce high‑fidelity mock‑ups.
• Continuously innovate and improve design and build processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Experience creating, simplifying, and managing complex surface geometry in CAD (preferably CATIA).
• Proactive attitude in a rapid product‑development environment.
• Strong understanding of rapid prototyping methods.
• Excellent communication and time‑management skills.
