Machine Shop Manager

About the role

The Machine Shop Manager leads the Texas A&M University Space Institute’s machine shop in Houston, overseeing fabrication services, equipment resources, and user training to support tenants, researchers, and Institute initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily operations of the machine shop and fabrication laboratory, producing specialized components for tenant and Institute projects.
• Consult with tenants and researchers to define fabrication requirements, assess feasibility, and prepare estimates for labor, materials, and timelines.
• Maintain and evaluate complex equipment such as CNC mills, lathes, welding systems, and precision instrumentation.
• Develop and enforce standard operating procedures, manage inventory, and coordinate procurement.
• Supervise machine shop personnel, provide hands‑on technical instruction, and ensure safe equipment use.
• Lead safety compliance, audits, and quality assurance to meet engineering specifications and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field or equivalent experience.
• At least six years of related experience in machine shop operations, fabrication, or laboratory management.
• Experience supervising staff and delivering technical training.
• U.S. citizenship (position is security‑sensitive).

Required skills

• Proficiency with CNC machining equipment (mills, lathes).
• Experience using welding systems and precision instrumentation.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAM, GD&T, and precision measurement systems.
• Ability to develop SOPs, manage inventory, and oversee safety programs.
