Lead Phlebotomy Technician

About the role

Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital in Warrensville Heights is hiring a Lead Phlebotomy Technician for the Lab Phlebotomy department. The role keeps the inpatient phlebotomy, outpatient lab and specimen processing areas running smoothly, while also serving as a team member with strong customer service. The shift is 4:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with call requirements every other weekend and holidays.

Key responsibilities

• Draw blood from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques and interpret physician orders for sample collection
• Instruct patients on how to collect specimens and deliver samples to the Laboratory Accession Area
• Process specimens and enter results for tests sent to reference laboratories
• Handle customer service issues and act as the point person for problem resolution when the supervisor or team leader is absent
• Coordinate orientation and training schedules, train phlebotomy students and orient new employees
• Run in-services and continuing education programs and stay current on new procedures and equipment
• Maintain the inventory system for laboratory stock and outpatient drawing areas
• Help the supervisor and team leader meet accrediting and regulatory standards and safety guidelines

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• Two years of experience in a clinical laboratory
• Demonstrated leadership and training experience
• Preferred: Associate's degree, phlebotomy certification and hospital experience

Required skills

• Proficiency in infant and pediatric phlebotomy
• Ability to lift and carry under 15 lbs, walk, stand and bend, and use both hands
• Depth perception and ability to distinguish colors and shades
• Standard precautions with personal protective equipment
