HPC Storage Engineer - West Coast

About the role

Runpod is seeking a senior, hands‑on Storage Engineer to design, scale, and ensure the reliability of its multi‑region storage ecosystem supporting AI workloads. This remote‑first position involves building distributed storage deployments, writing automation code, and leading capacity planning.

Key responsibilities

• Own capacity, durability, availability, and performance of network volumes, local NVMe, and S3‑compatible object storage.
• Tune the full I/O path, including device, filesystem, caching, replication, and client‑side mount behavior.
• Lead capacity expansions, hardware refreshes, migrations, and rebalances without customer‑visible disruption.
• Design and tune network paths for storage, including high‑throughput east‑west fabric, MTU, jumbo frames, and RDMA/RoCE.
• Write production code (Go, Python, Rust) for storage control‑plane services, provisioning workflows, data movement pipelines, and monitoring.
• Automate operations, treat infrastructure as code, and participate in code review, testing, and CI.
• Instrument the storage fleet with metrics, dashboards, SLOs, and alerts to detect degradation early.
• Participate in on‑call rotation and drive blameless post‑incident follow‑through.

Required profile

• 8+ years in infrastructure, storage, or systems engineering with production ownership at scale.
• Deep practical experience with at least one distributed storage system (e.g., Ceph, MinIO, Lustre, GPFS/Spectrum Scale, MooseFS, WekaFS, VAST, ZFS).
• Strong Linux internals and storage‑stack knowledge, including block layer, filesystems, NVMe, and I/O schedulers.
• Proficiency in writing production code in Go, Python, Rust, or similar.
• Hands‑on experience with observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) and metric design.
• Self‑starter attitude, continuous improvement mindset, and ownership across team boundaries.
