About the role
The Horticulture & Landscape Maintenance Supervisor leads the daily operations of the university’s grounds staff on the Boston campus, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance while preserving the campus arboretum.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate daily assignments for 8–12 grounds staff across 11+ acres, monitor work quality, and provide training.
- Enforce safety protocols, manage snow‑removal and weather‑related emergency crews, and ensure pedestrian safety during New England winters.
- Oversee irrigation systems, support water‑conservation initiatives, and maintain high‑traffic hardscape areas.
- Plan and implement seasonal plantings, maintain signature features such as the Koi Pond and Veterans Memorial Gardens, and support pollinator programs.
- Collaborate with campus departments for special events and ensure grounds meet PGMS Honor Award standards.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management, Urban Forestry or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum 7 years progressive landscape/grounds maintenance experience.
- At least 3 years supervisory experience managing crews.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to obtain a Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months.
Required skills
- Strong knowledge of plant identification and care for woody and perennial species (USDA Zone 6b).
- Expertise in turf care, urban soil conditions, irrigation systems, and stormwater/green infrastructure.
- Experience with integrated pest management and a Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator License (Categories 36 & 37).
- Proficiency with landscape equipment, safety standards, and GIS/digital tree inventory systems.
- OSHA 10 safety certification (preferred) and ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
