Horticultural Attendant – Superintendent

About the role

This position supervises and performs grounds maintenance, landscape installation, and special projects such as irrigation, drainage, concrete work, and arboriculture. The incumbent also manages inmate crews, contract labor, and handles administrative duties related to the department.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and support direct reports, inmate crews, and contract labor in daily landscape maintenance and installation tasks.
• Plan, schedule, and procure materials and equipment for routine maintenance and project work.
• Perform all human‑resource functions including time‑keeping, performance reviews, accident reporting, and disciplinary actions.
• Oversee preventative maintenance, repair, and daily cleaning of equipment; conduct irrigation inspections and system commissioning.
• Execute additional duties as directed, such as concrete/asphalt removal, tree limb removal, and event‑specific grounds projects.

Required profile

• Four years of experience in groundskeeping, tree and shrub care, or related field, OR 24 semester hours in plant science/landscape studies.
• Ability to lift 50 lb and perform physical tasks including stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, and working in outdoor conditions.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Subject to drug/alcohol testing, pre‑employment physical examination, and emergency reporting requirements.
