About the role
This job receives and accessions surgical, biopsy, and autopsy specimens for routine tissue processing and subsequent microscopic examination. It assists pathologists, pathologist assistants and residents in the gross dissection room and performs special procedures such as special stains and undecalcified bone processing.
Key responsibilities
- Properly orient tissue in paraffin embedding medium ensuring all surfaces are embedded and sectioned on the same plane.
- Prepare tissue or slides for special procedures (send outs, EM, IF, Cell Flow, Cytogenetic) including packaging, transportation, documentation and billing.
- Maintain an adequate supply of positive control slides and document QC on the Control Tissue log.
- Complete pathologist, supervisor and management requests within 24 hours, notifying of any delays.
- Clean and maintain reagents, tissue processors, embedding center, microtomy equipment, H&E stainer and keep work areas clean.
- Perform special procedures such as special stains and undecalcified bone processing.
- Follow safety guidelines and document any incidents appropriately.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree or 60 semester hours with biology and chemistry coursework preferred.
- At least 1 year experience in a histopathology laboratory or ASCP Histotechnician certification.
- Interpersonal skills to interact courteously with patients, physicians, nurses and other personnel.
- Excellent judgment to identify and solve problems, prioritize work and handle difficult situations.
- Ability to manage stress, work independently and maintain a professional atmosphere.
- Computer proficiency for data entry, Windows‑style applications and laboratory information systems.
Required skills
- Operation of microtomes and cryostats.
- Use of automated slide strainers and cover‑slip applicators.
- Performance of special stain techniques and undecalcified bone processing.
- Proficiency with Windows applications and laboratory data entry systems.
