Highway Maintainer - Wayne County, Fairfield Team

About the role

The Illinois Department of Transportation is hiring two Highway Maintainers for the Wayne County Fairfield Team. The role covers the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and related structures and features. It is a full-time, salaried union position (Teamsters) with a Monday to Friday schedule of 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, fully in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Operate CDL Class A vehicles.
• Perform labor related to roadway maintenance.
• Assist in snow and ice control during snow and ice conditions.
• Maintain roadside and right-of-way.
• Perform routine housekeeping at headquarters and remove trash, dead animals and debris along highways.
• Maintain on-the-job records and perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four years of high school.
• Class A CDL with X or N endorsement and no airbrake restrictions.
• One year of driving experience immediately before appointment, free of incidents that could lead to license suspension or revocation.
• Ability to perform arduous outdoor labor in adverse conditions, including climbing steep terrain and working around traffic.
• Background check, pre-employment physical, and successful drug and alcohol testing (cannabis prohibited).

Required skills

• Class A CDL with X or N endorsement.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
