Healthy Start Lactation Counselor

About the role

The Healthy Start Coalition at Indian River Hospital seeks a Lactation Counselor to provide in‑home and bedside breastfeeding support to new mothers. This PRN position works evenings, weekends and holidays, offering a rewarding opportunity to enhance nursing skills while making a lasting impact on families.

Key responsibilities

• Provide basic lactation instruction, support and anticipatory guidance to promote optimal breastfeeding.
• Educate and assist mothers at the bedside, in individualized sessions and via follow‑up phone calls.
• Encourage participation in the TLC newborn program for additional postpartum support.
• Maintain accurate client records, submit required documentation, and prepare reports using computer applications.
• Refer mothers to IBCLC, physicians, nurses or community resources as needed.

Required profile

• High School Diploma/GED and a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Certified Lactation Counselor through an accredited program.
• Experience working with breastfeeding mothers, infants, child development and maternal health.
• Knowledge of community resources, maternal‑child health systems and home‑visiting programs in Indian River County.
• Spanish fluency is preferred; one to two years of related experience is a plus.

Required skills

• Ability to operate a PC and standard office equipment.
• Strong record‑keeping and documentation skills.
