Grocery Store Checker

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Checker for its Spring Lake Park store in the Grocery department. Checkers are often the last face a customer sees before leaving the store, operating the register, assisting customers throughout the store and helping every visit end on a good note. The role is hourly and offers full training.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers warmly, learn their names and make every visit a positive one
• Scan products and process payments including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges and lottery tickets
• Count change, issue receipts and handle cash refunds or credit memoranda for returns
• Ensure compliance with WIC, food stamp and tobacco, liquor and lottery ticket regulations
• Bag or box merchandise, assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service
• Know item look-up numbers, department numbers, features and weekly ad prices and sales
• Stock, face and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, read shelf tags and guide customers to items
• Keep the register area clean, check supplies and report low cash levels; verify register balances at the start and end of shifts
• Answer customer questions on the intercom or telephone and follow up with the right personnel
• Support store safety and security, help with displays and decorations for promotions, and take on special projects as assigned

Required profile

• No education or experience required; training is provided
• Ability to follow written or verbal instructions and work as part of a team
• Physical demands include standing and walking most of a shift, handling sharp knives and blades where applicable, exposure to heat and cleaning chemicals, and operating a delivery vehicle to DOT standards where applicable

Required skills

• Arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages
• Reading and following directions and communicating supply needs

What we offer

• Anticipated starting wage of $13.00 to $16.25 per hour depending on experience
