General Merchandise Department Manager

About the role

Meijer is preparing to open its newest supercenter in Glen Carbon/Edwardsville, Illinois, serving the greater St. Louis metro area in spring 2027. It is looking for an engaged General Merchandise Department Manager to help launch the store. The manager is responsible for team member engagement, including recognition, feedback, coaching, performance management, training and development, and succession planning. The manager directs Leads and Team Leaders and is accountable for area operations and financials, including shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling and staffing forecasts, as well as conflict resolution. The manager must be able to travel for training until the store opens.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure team members receive appropriate onboarding, training, development, coaching and feedback.
• Identify talent and hold career conversations to support store staffing and a diverse pipeline for team members and leadership.
• Hold candid discussions so Meijer standards are upheld and team members can grow within the organization.
• Own area operations and financial results, including budget line items in the P&L, and oversee corporate plans to maximize sales and productivity.
• Drive safety and compliance, condition management and adherence to compliance procedures.
• Make sure Team Leaders and Leads assign daily work and training needs.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 4+ years of retail/grocery or customer service experience.
• Progressive leadership experience preferred.
• Ability to communicate clearly and precisely with team members.
• Ability to analyze financial and statistical information and make informed decisions.
• Ability to lead an organization that works safely at all times.
• Strong business acumen and understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising.

• Pay range of $48,250 to $75,750, with possible incentive bonuses.
