Field Equipment Maintenance Specialist

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Field Equipment Maintenance Specialist for the US Antarctic Program at McMurdo Station. The role is primarily responsible for the daily operation of the field equipment center, while also helping deliver winter field safety training, supporting the Search and Rescue team and assisting Operations groups going into the field.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with all Environmental Health and Safety and Quality Assurance requirements.
• Repair, maintain and clean field equipment including sleds, tents, stoves, ice coring equipment and climbing gear.
• Deliver winter field safety training on cold weather survival, risk management, radio communications, local weather and basic first aid.
• Take part in Search and Rescue training and incident response, and help with Emergency Operations Center activities during prolonged responses.
• Take part in annual inventory cycles, ship-offload activities and track equipment issued to and returned from sponsored events.
• Operate forklifts, snow machines and tracked vehicles, and operate an industrial sewing machine to repair and fabricate items.
• Lift and move heavy objects and interact professionally with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; at least two years of logistics or supply experience, one year of which must include outdoor equipment maintenance.
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with successful medical, dental, drug screening, employer and federal background checks.
• US citizenship required to obtain and maintain facility credentials at the site.
• Valid US driver's license; no clearance required but the site requires it.
• Ability to lift and move heavy loads, climb in and out of equipment, crawl and work outdoors in extreme cold.

Required skills

• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, glacial travel and basic mountaineering experience.
• Preferred: exposure to computerized data management, expedition outfitting, Arctic/Antarctic field work, outdoor education or guiding.
