About the role
The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter) Repairer I is a developmental position within the Structures and Grounds Division of the Airport Maintenance Department. You will repair, replace, and construct carpentry, roofing, upholstery, and other building maintenance items at Dulles International Airport and related facilities.
Key responsibilities
- Perform carpentry, roofing, and related building maintenance tasks, including measuring, cutting, and installing materials.
- Conduct monthly preventive maintenance inspections of airport structures and address trip hazards.
- Locate and repair leaks, damaged roof areas, and apply protective coatings.
- Assist in new construction projects such as wall layouts, partitions, acoustical ceilings, doors, and hardware installation.
- Fabricate wood and metal parts, construct concrete sidewalks, storm drains, retaining walls, and install traffic signs and guard rails.
- Support upholstery work, seat pattern cutting, and mobile lounge bumper remounting.
- Perform on‑the‑job training assignments and comply with work orders, building codes, and safety regulations.
Required profile
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in industrial or office building maintenance.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid state driver’s license in good standing.
- Ability to work safely in an airport environment and operate airside/landside vehicles (AOA permit required).
Required skills
- Carpentry and roofing techniques.
- Upholstery and seat‑fabric work.
- Use of hand and power tools (drills, saws, hammers, wrenches, meters).
- Concrete, masonry, and asphalt construction skills.
- Drywall, metal stud, and acoustical ceiling installation.
- Traffic sign and guard‑rail installation.
- Computerized work order and time‑attendance systems.
