Extension Specialist – Home & Community Food Production & HGIC Director

About the role

The University of Maryland Extension seeks a 12‑month tenure‑track Extension Specialist to lead home and community food production initiatives and serve as Director of the Home & Garden Information Center (HGIC). Based at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center, the role blends applied research, educational programming, and integrated pest management expertise across the state.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver educational programs for field faculty, Master Gardeners, schools, public agencies, nonprofits, and businesses.
• Provide technical support on soil health, plant and pest diagnostics, organic pest management, water quality, intensive production techniques, and climate‑resilient crops.
• Oversee HGIC operations, including digital horticulture resources, staff supervision, and statewide outreach (≈25% of time).
• Develop partnerships with campus faculty, state agencies, elected officials, and community groups to promote best practices.
• Lead planning and execution of public workshops, training events, and extension activities.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in horticulture, agronomy, environmental science, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in applied research and extension education.
• Strong record of collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to manage a small team and coordinate statewide programs.
