Environmental Technician

About the role

North Wind Services is seeking an Environmental Technician to support hazardous and radioactive waste management for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The role involves hands‑on waste handling, testing, and emergency response within a federal research environment.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, package, label, segregate, treat, store, and verify hazardous, low‑level radioactive, mixed and transuranic waste while wearing appropriate PPE.
• Operate wastewater retention tanks, perform pump‑outs, conduct lab packing of waste chemicals, and manage waste container storage areas.
• Test and sample waste (pH, visual) and operate radiation survey instruments to obtain radiological data.
• Drive and operate material‑handling equipment such as 5‑ton trucks, forklifts, drum handlers, and mechanical pumps.
• Respond to environmental emergencies, perform decontamination, and provide front‑line customer service to waste generators.

Required profile

• Associate degree in environmental science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Basic knowledge of federal and state regulations for hazardous and radioactive waste management.
• Ability to meet medical qualifications, wear respiratory protection, climb ladders, and complete required training.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work both independently and within a team.

Required skills

• Operation of radiation survey instruments and pH meters.
• Use of PPE such as anti‑C respirators and hearing protection.
• Forklift and truck operation, including 5‑ton vehicles.
• Handling of hazardous and radioactive waste packaging and documentation.
