Environmental Health and Safety Manager

About the role
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Department of Physical Plant seeks an experienced Environmental Health and Safety Manager to lead the campus’s environmental safety programs. This full‑time, exempt position oversees compliance with federal, state and local regulations, manages emergency response equipment, and supports a safe working environment for all staff and students.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct fire protection system tests, including detection, suppression, alarm and water supply systems.
- Lead regular meetings of Radiation, Physical Plant and Risk Management committees and implement their directives.
- Supervise motor pool operations, including vehicle repairs, scheduling, certification and personnel issues.
- Perform routine environmental surveys covering indoor air quality, asbestos, lead‑based paint, hazardous chemicals, and radiation waste.
- Develop and oversee emergency response procedures and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
Required profile
- Bachelor of Science degree.
- Three to five years of experience in environmental safety, occupational safety or industrial hygiene.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA and Right‑to‑Know compliance standards.
- Familiarity with federal, state and local regulations for chemical, biological, radioactive and waste management.
- Proficiency with basic computer software.
