About the role
CACI is hiring an Embedded Linux Engineer for a remote, individual-contributor position supporting the current IRD embedded retransmission device and its next-generation replacement. The current device is an OpenWrt-based embedded Linux system providing networking and retransmission, and the next generation moves to new hardware and an Alma Linux-based architecture. The role covers development, integration, sustainment and defect resolution, with up to 10% travel within the continental US.
Key responsibilities
- Migrate an existing OpenWrt-based device to next-generation ARM hardware and an Alma Linux-based architecture.
- Sustain and enhance the current OpenWrt firmware, including image configuration, custom feeds, services, first-boot behavior and firmware builds.
- Develop and maintain software in Python, Bash/shell scripting, C or C++ for embedded applications, automation and tooling.
- Build and maintain Linux and Buildroot image creation, packaging, provisioning, release and deployment workflows.
- Develop REST APIs and device-management UIs, and implement networking features such as routing, DNS, Wi-Fi, cellular/modem integration and secure communications.
- Create unit, integration, system, simulation and hardware-connected tests, and support CI/CD pipelines, GitLab reviews and reproducible builds.
- Support secure software development, including vulnerability remediation, certificates, authentication, authorization, software-update integrity, dependency management and CVE analysis.
- Document design, build, API, test and operational information, and work with hardware, cybersecurity, QA and product teams.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Five or more years of professional software-development experience.
- At least five years of experience with Linux-based systems, including embedded Linux, networking appliances and device-management software.
- Experience with ARM- and/or Intel or x86-based devices, cross-compilation and embedded Linux image creation.
- Two years of experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, and experience writing unit, integration, system or hardware-in-the-loop tests.
- Strong communication skills, ability to write technical documentation and work remotely in a cross-functional team.
Required skills
- Linux system configuration, debugging, networking, package management and deployment.
- OpenWrt, Buildroot, Yocto or similar embedded Linux build systems.
- REST APIs, device-management apps and web-based configuration interfaces.
- Git and GitLab, including merge requests and code review.
What we offer
- Proposed pay range of $82,100 to $172,400, depending on location, experience and skills.
- Healthcare, wellness, financial, retirement, family support, continuing education and time-off benefits.
- Flexible time off and learning resources.
