Electrical Engineer III – Substation Projects

About the role

Minnesota Power is seeking an Electrical Engineer III to lead complex substation projects across Minnesota. The role focuses on medium to high‑voltage system design, ensuring safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design of high‑impact substation projects from concept through completion, defining scope, layouts, and equipment specifications.
• Serve as the technical expert for medium and high‑voltage systems, guiding internal teams, consultants, and vendors, and approving critical engineering designs.
• Apply standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI to develop safe, reliable, cost‑effective electrical systems.
• Collaborate with construction managers, senior leadership, and diverse stakeholders to develop execution strategies and ensure engineering excellence at every phase.
• Travel throughout the service territory to inspect substations, connect technical expertise to field operations, and support occasional after‑hours activities.

Required profile

• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
• Experience in electric utility or power‑generation environments.
• Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams and manage complex projects.
• Strong understanding of medium and high‑voltage electrical systems and regulatory requirements.
