About the role
The Director of Research Animal Welfare provides veterinary oversight for research animal programs across multiple Texas A&M System members. This senior position ensures high standards of animal health, welfare, and regulatory compliance while supporting scientific research.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as the attending veterinarian for multiple system members.
- Provide clinical veterinary services, including diagnostics, treatments, preventative care, and emergency care for research animals.
- Develop, review, and implement animal care and use programs in line with USDA, NIH, AAALAC, ACURO and other relevant regulations.
- Write, review, and update standard operating procedures, guidelines, and institutional policies related to animal care.
- Participate as the veterinary member on Institutional Animal Care & Use Committees (IACUCs) and Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs), providing expert consultation and training.
- Supervise other veterinarians and coordinate care with external veterinary providers as needed.
Required profile
- Veterinary degree (DVM or equivalent) with extensive experience in research animal medicine.
- Proven ability to oversee multi‑site animal welfare programs and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Experience serving on IACUCs or similar oversight committees.
- Strong communication skills to interact with institutional officials and committee leadership.
