Director of Finance – Lead Finance Function

About the role

SCB, an award‑winning national design firm, is seeking a Director of Finance to lead its finance and accounting function from the Chicago headquarters. Reporting directly to the COO, you will act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and ensure the integrity of all financial operations.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with the COO, CEO, Principals, Studio Leaders and Department Heads to translate financial data into actionable insights.
• Own the accuracy, timeliness and integrity of month‑end close, management reporting, forecasting, variance analysis and year‑end activities.
• Analyze firm‑wide performance—including project profitability, backlog, utilization and staffing trends—to highlight risks and opportunities.
• Lead, mentor and develop a small accounting team, setting priorities and fostering a culture of accountability.
• Oversee day‑to‑day finance operations: general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, cash flow, billing, collections, payroll, fixed assets, budgeting and reporting.
• Maintain and improve financial systems, workflows, controls, policies and reporting tools.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading finance functions in a mid‑size or larger organization.
• Strong business acumen with the ability to turn numbers into strategic actions.
• Excellent communication skills to influence senior leaders.
• Track record of building and developing high‑performing finance teams.
