Director of Data Science - Online Search and Recommendations

About the role

The Home Depot is hiring a Director of Data Science for its online search and recommendations business area. The role works with functional and technical leaders to turn data science into a competitive advantage, builds and develops a skilled data science team, defines metrics against business goals and ensures a standard operating and costing model is used to measure return on investment and secure funding.

Key responsibilities

• People management: lead, mentor and coach direct reports, set a clear team vision, attract and retain top talent, run onboarding and training plans, foster collaboration and celebrate results.
• Data science advocacy: align with business leaders on objectives, act as escalation point for project issues, champion data science capabilities and define metrics for performance against business goals.
• Strategy and business development: seek new business opportunities using data science, develop a standardized operating model and cost structure for ROI and project funding, build trust with internal customers and cross-functional teams, and drive adoption of leading-edge predictive and prescriptive techniques.

Required profile

• Must be 18 or older and legally permitted to work in the United States.
• Preferred: 11+ years of experience in business intelligence and analytics, and previous people or project team management experience.
• Preferred: a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a field related to the job.
• Typically reports to a Senior Director or above and manages programs with direct reports; typically requires less than 10% overnight travel.

Required skills

• Preferred: expertise in predictive modeling, data mining and data analysis.
• Preferred: running queries against data, preferably with Google BigQuery or SQL.
• Preferred: data visualization, preferably Tableau.
• Preferred: statistical techniques and prescriptive modeling such as optimization, computer vision, recommendation, search or NLP.
• Preferred: ability to communicate with and lead relationships with functional and technical leaders, vendors and partners.
