Data Scientist / Senior Data Scientist – Safety

About the role

Join the Safety Science team at American Airlines as a Data Scientist focused on safety. You will apply advanced analytics and machine learning to uncover emerging safety trends and help prevent incidents across the airline’s operations.

Key responsibilities

• Close the loop between safety data collection and operational stakeholders to support risk‑based decision making.
• Design, build, and maintain high‑fidelity statistical and machine‑learning models that proactively identify safety trends.
• Define data structures and integrate proprietary and public data sources without delaying implementation.
• Collaborate with Data Engineers to source new data, ensure data quality, and assess effectiveness.
• Create innovative ways to deliver safety insights and recommendations to leadership.
• Work with Data Analysis Groups and Operations Standards Boards to translate findings into actionable safety improvements.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or Industrial Engineering.
• Proven expertise in collecting, cleaning, preprocessing, and analyzing large datasets to generate actionable insights.
• At least 3 years of hands‑on experience with data‑science or machine‑learning projects/products.
