Data Scientist

About the role

As a Data Scientist at Elsevier, part of RELX, you will develop AI and machine‑learning solutions that accelerate scientific discovery across a global research ecosystem. You will work with one of the world’s largest collections of scientific publications, datasets, citations, and knowledge graphs to make research more discoverable and actionable.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and deploy machine‑learning, NLP and generative‑AI models that help researchers find, understand and apply scientific knowledge.
• Create intelligent retrieval, search, recommendation, ranking and question‑answering systems.
• Develop pipelines that connect information across publications, datasets, citations, knowledge graphs and ontologies.
• Fine‑tune, evaluate and integrate large language models and retrieval‑augmented generation (RAG) systems into production.
• Establish robust evaluation frameworks to measure quality, relevance, trustworthiness and user impact.
• Build scalable data pipelines and ML workflows for experimentation, monitoring and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics or a related quantitative field.
• Proven experience applying machine‑learning and deep‑learning techniques to complex problems.
• Ability to translate ambiguous research challenges into practical AI solutions.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Machine learning and deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Natural language processing and generative AI techniques.
• Large language models and retrieval‑augmented generation.
• Knowledge of knowledge graphs, ontologies and metadata structures.
• Data pipeline construction and ML workflow orchestration.
