Controller

About the role

Pizzo Group, a family of companies focused on habitat restoration and native plants, is hiring a Controller for its People Solutions Center. This is a hands-on financial leadership role for someone with experience in accounting operations, budgeting, financial controls and how financial decisions affect the business. The role oversees the finance and accounting team and function, and will initially be based in Leland, IL, with a plan to move to Saint Charles, IL in 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee accounting operations and accurate, timely financial reporting for both companies.
• Manage monthly and annual closes, financial statements, reconciliations and general ledger activities.
• Lead budgeting, monitor financial performance, manage cash flow forecasts and provide leadership with financial information for operational decisions.
• Maintain financial controls, accounting procedures and regulatory compliance.
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking activities and intercompany transactions.
• Directly supervise, guide and evaluate the Purchaser/Inventory Specialist and Bookkeeper.
• Oversee purchasing and inventory financial controls, recordkeeping, approvals and asset accountability.
• Analyze operating expenses, job costing, inventory costs and profitability, and recommend improvements.
• Collaborate with leadership on financial planning, operating decisions and business growth.
• Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, financial institutions and professional advisers.
• Improve accounting systems, reporting processes and financial efficiency.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, or equivalent related experience.
• 8-10+ years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
• Experience with job costing, inventory controls and interpreting departmental profitability.
• Preferred: CPA or CMA designation, multi-company accounting and prior supervisory experience.
• Preferred: experience in contracting, construction, agriculture, nursery production or related industries.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of accounting principles, reporting, budgeting and internal controls.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software, including QuickBooks.
• Leadership, analytical, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills.

What we offer

• Starting base salary of $100,000 to $125,000 depending on experience.
