Controller – Finance Leader for Non-profit (Denver)

About the role
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and finance operations for a mission‑driven non‑profit organization serving communities across Colorado. Based in Denver, the role partners with executive leadership and the Board to guide financial planning, ensure compliance, and deliver clear reporting.
Key responsibilities
- Direct the organization’s accounting and financial activities, maintaining accurate records, strong controls, and effective day‑to‑day fiscal management.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to develop long‑range financial plans, annual budgets, and regular forecasts aligned with organizational priorities.
- Manage government funding processes, overseeing grant budgeting, documentation, compliance tracking, and timely financial reporting.
- Supervise financial administration of affordable housing programs, ensuring regulatory adherence and performance outcomes.
- Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to sustain operations and fund strategic initiatives.
- Lead improvements to finance systems and internal processes for greater efficiency and reporting quality.
- Oversee financial reporting for leadership and the Board, including statements, variance analysis, and trend insights.
- Coordinate external audits and regulatory reviews while maintaining compliance with accounting standards and funding requirements.
- Mentor and develop finance staff, fostering accountability and high performance.
- Evaluate financial risk and reinforce internal controls to protect assets and support reliable decision‑making.
Required profile
- 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, finance, or controllership roles, preferably within a non‑profit environment.
- Proven success leading financial planning, budgeting, reporting, and compliance for complex organizations.
- Experience managing government grants and related reporting requirements with strong attention to accuracy and deadlines.
- Background overseeing multiple revenue sources such as donations, fundraising income, grants, or program‑based funding.
- Demonstrated leadership ability to guide, coach, and develop finance professionals.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent credential preferred.
Required skills
- In‑depth knowledge of accounting practices, internal controls, and audit coordination.
- Experience with grant budgeting, compliance tracking, and regulatory reporting.
- Ability to interpret financial results and communicate recommendations clearly to executives, Board members, and non‑financial stakeholders.
