Control Software Engineer – Real-time Systems

About the role

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Control Software Engineer to design, implement, and verify software that drives advanced R&D equipment and complex machinery. You will join a fast‑growing team building the next generation of fusion power plants, delivering production‑ready code for mission‑critical real‑time systems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop control software across multiple platforms, including PLCs and real‑time Linux.
• Create operator interfaces and workflow tools for engineers and scientists.
• Integrate software with hardware and software testbeds, ensuring seamless operation.
• Improve tooling and development processes to increase developer velocity.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineers to gather requirements and validate solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience developing production‑quality control software for industrial or embedded systems.
• Proven ability to work with real‑time, safety‑critical environments.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and a commitment to safety standards.

Required skills

• Python programming.
• Proficiency in at least one real‑time control language (C++, SCL/ST, Rust, etc.).
• Experience with PLCs and real‑time Linux.
• Modern software development practices (CI/CD, Git, unit and integration testing).
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherCat, Profinet, Modbus).
• Development of Human‑Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for industrial equipment.
• Knowledge of Linux, IP/UDP networking, and platforms such as Beckhoff TwinCat.
