Congenital Perfusionist

About the role

Join Cleveland Clinic's renowned Congenital Heart Surgery team as a Congenital Perfusionist. You will provide life‑sustaining cardiopulmonary bypass support for pediatric and congenital heart patients while working with advanced perfusion technology.

Key responsibilities

• Assemble, operate, and disassemble the heart‑lung machine and provide total patient support during cardiopulmonary bypass.
• Set up and operate ECMO circuits, cell savers, rapid‑infusion devices and other perfusion equipment, sometimes using X‑ray or fluoroscopy.
• Manage patient parameters within safe clinical ranges and support organ transplants, laser procedures, LVAD support, and new surgical techniques.
• Perform patient charting, prepare sterile packs, and assist in research, animal testing, product evaluation and staff education.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree and completion of an accredited perfusion school; eligible for American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certification.
• Current Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) certification or ability to obtain it within three testing cycles.
• Physical ability to lift 100 lb, stand or sit for extended periods, and provide 24‑hour on‑call coverage.
• Willingness to travel for organ procurement and to complete on‑the‑job training (3 months plus 1 year).

Required skills

• Operation of heart‑lung machines and ECMO systems.
• Use of cell savers, rapid‑infusion devices, LVAD support equipment.
• Proficiency with X‑ray/fluoroscopy as a diagnostic aid.
• Charting, sterile pack preparation, and research assistance.
