Commissary Technician

About the role

The Commissary Technician supports animal care by preparing diets and managing food inventory for Zoo New England’s animal collection. Working a 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. shift, you will ensure that all feed items are ready, safe, and delivered to the right locations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare animal diets according to formulas and schedules, using techniques such as thawing, chopping, washing, peeling, boiling, shredding, and weighing.
• Receive, inspect, and record deliveries of produce, grains, hay, and other feed items, rejecting any that do not meet quality standards.
• Maintain accurate inventory records, rotate stock, and restock commissary supplies.
• Follow OSHA, USDA, AZA, and local health regulations for safety and sanitation.
• Deliver prepared feed to various zoo locations and assist with occasional weekend, holiday, or overtime shifts.

• Excellent organizational skills for managing a compact space with large inventory.
• Commitment to high standards of cleanliness and quality.

Required skills

• Food preparation techniques (thawing, chopping, washing, peeling, boiling, shredding, weighing).
• Inventory management and stock rotation.
• Knowledge of safety and sanitation regulations (OSHA, USDA, AZA).
