Civil Service Secretary / Chief Examiner

About the role

The City of Pullman Civil Service Commission is hiring an independent contractor to serve as Secretary and Chief Examiner. This position oversees the administration of civil service examinations, ensures compliance with state law, and supports the Commission’s mission to maintain a merit‑based public workforce.

Key responsibilities

• Determine examination content, weighting, and schedule, subject to Commission approval.
• Supervise the conduct of examinations, appointing experts, proctors, and special examiners as needed.
• Coordinate with Police and Fire Chiefs on applicant eligibility, admission, and examination issues.
• Recommend certification of successful candidates for eligibility lists.
• Attend Commission meetings, record votes, prepare minutes, and present examination matters for approval.
• Maintain confidential information and comply with all relevant policies, ethics laws, and regulations.

Required profile

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in business, psychology, social sciences, paralegal, human resources, or a related field, or three years of relevant experience.
• Qualified citizen of the City of Pullman.
• Ability to work an unpredictable schedule, including days of eight hours or more.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
