Civil Engineer Trainee - District 4

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, is hiring eight Civil Engineer Trainees for District 4 in Peoria, Illinois. The position supports the preparation of final plans and the implementation of work for highway construction projects. It is a full-time, salaried role with an anticipated starting salary of $4,631 per month (range $4,631-$6,323), working 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, with a hybrid schedule of 1 to 5 days per week in the office.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all assigned work.
• Provide accurate measurement, computation and documentation of engineering items.
• Keep the supervisor informed of problems encountered or deviations made.
• Make sure inspected and designed items comply with specifications.
• Provide accurate and timely layouts and plans.
• Rotate to other bureaus within the district as part of the rotational training program.
• Perform duties in line with departmental safety rules and in a way that treats all employees fairly.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college (including those expected to graduate within 12 months), with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA; a GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 requires an Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, a Professional Engineer license or a Structural Engineer license in Illinois.

Preferred qualifications

• Working knowledge of routine civil engineering practices.
• Coursework and training in civil engineering.
• Basic skill in the use of engineering field and office instruments.
