Civil Engineer Trainee - District 2

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, is hiring a Civil Engineer Trainee for District 2 in Dixon, Illinois. The position supports the preparation of final plans and the implementation of work for highway construction projects. It is a full-time, salaried union position with 10 vacancies, open from October 1 to October 30, 2026.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all assigned work.
• Provide accurate measurement, computation and documentation of engineering items.
• Keep the supervisor informed of problems encountered or deviations made.
• Make sure inspected and designed items comply with specifications.
• Provide accurate and timely layouts and plans.
• Rotate to other bureaus within the district as part of the rotational training program.
• Perform duties in line with departmental safety rules and in a way that treats all employees fairly.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college (including those expected to graduate within 12 months), or a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, or a current Professional Engineer license in Illinois, or a current Structural Engineer license.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the state does not sponsor employment visas.

What we offer

• Anticipated starting salary of $4,631 per month, with a range of $4,631 to $6,323 per month.
• Hybrid schedule: 1 to 5 days per week in the office, depending on operational needs.
